 Trail of Tears Encaustic Abstract by Ardis Harsche 24” X 24” (2007) 
In “Trail of Tears” the images are carved into the surface bringing the pervious layers back into view. This painting illustrates the death march of the Native American’s relocation. The irregular movement represents the confusion of going to the unknown and the fused images on the right represent the unfortunate melting back into the earth. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 authorized the removal of all southwestern tribes to a newly created Indian Territory west of the Mississippi. Over 6000 took the “Trail of Tears” where thousands perished from hunger, cold, despair and illness. |
